65 nuclear power plants (with 104 reactors) are currently in operation in the United States. After radioactive material escaped from Japan’s Fukushima power plant, everyone within 30 kilometres (18 miles) of the plant was evacuated. Our map shows how many people live close to US nuclear power plants who would have to be evacuated in a similar situation. We have also included three canadian nuclear power plants that border on US.
